"Don't Think for Yourself" by Jessica JÄMTING
Oil pastel, collage mounted on panel in a deep frame.
About the work:
Ahead of the World Cup, Adidas, Nike, Puma, New Balance and Skechers saw their chance to stand out. They just needed the perfect shoe.
A lot was already decided. Tests and measurements had shown that players love wearing colorful shoes. Bright shoes feel faster, give more confidence and they also have the advantage of being very visible - like no one can miss a pair of neon-colored shoes. Perfect if you want to wear a lot of shoes?!
Now it was just a matter of choosing the right color.
You might think that companies with some of the world's top designers and billion-dollar budgets could decide for themselves what color it should be. That the advantage of being Nike, Adidas and Puma is that you get to be the one to set the trends.
Well, think again.
Since it's about so much money, it has to be right. You can imagine, how scary would it be to be a design team and a design director and accidentally choose the wrong color? No one wants to be part of that.
So they did the most rational thing. They hired trend experts; trend agencies, who would find out which color would be best for the 2026 World Cup.
According to trend agencies, it takes several years to do a good trend analysis. They look at everything from fashion shows, street style and popular culture, to technology, social developments and sales data. And they use AI.
AI can handle an insane amount of information. And AI can find patterns that humans easily miss.
And the trend agencies turned out to be absolutely right. The shoes at the World Cup were indeed the color they had predicted. Were all the shoes pink? But no shoe and no brand stood out.
This is what the painting “Don't Think for Yourself” is about.
What do we lose when the most profitable must win?
